Martin Chan was born and brought up in Lancashire. He studied dentistry at the Royal Dental Hospital of London and graduated from the University of London in 1984. He completed a number of junior hospital jobs in London, Merseyside and South Wales before travelling overseas. He was appointed to teaching posts at the University Dental Schools of New Zealand and then Hong Kong. Upon returning to the U.K. he passed the Fellowship examinations in Dental Surgery, at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
Dr Chan underwent specialist training at the Leeds Dental Hospital and the Liverpool University Dental Hospital. He was awarded the Master of Dental Science Degree (University of Leeds) and also the Diploma in Restorative Dentistry (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh) and the Membership Diploma in Restorative Dentistry (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh). He passed the Intercollegiate Specialty Assessment in Restorative Dentistry (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow) and gained registration on four of the General Dental Council’s specialist lists. Dr Chan undertook further periods of elective study in the Netherlands and the USA prior to being appointed as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the Leeds Dental Institute (Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust) in 1997.

Dr Chan’s main focus is on the provision of specialist treatment for patients, and he is lead clinician for the dental implant programme at the Leeds Dental Institute. He also lectures to both undergraduate and post graduate dental students at the University of Leeds. He is very active in both general and specialist training of dentists and is Training Programme Director in Restorative Dentistry for the Yorkshire Deanery. He has written numerous articles which have been published in national and international dental journals, and has lectured at a variety of national dental conferences and international meetings. He has previously been Honorary Secretary to the British Society for the Study of Prosthetic Dentistry. He has served on the Specialist Advisory Committee at the Royal College of Surgeons and is Regional Specialty Advisor and specialist examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons.
